Was President William Ruto’s first state visit to the White House, Strategic or another “taxpayer vacation?”

President William Ruto, was  well received by the white house, after his four day planned trip which was set to end with his meeting the 46th United State President Joe Biden, who is on his last term as president.

Billed as “historic” by Ruto’s office, it is the first state visit by a Kenyan president to the United States in two decades and the first by an African leader since 2008, the Biden-Ruto talks were organized to handle a couple of issues amongst them being, Kenya’s plan to lead a police mission to Haiti to help stabilize the country following widespread violence by rival gangs and a collapse of the government’s authority, a bill that was prior denied by the judiciary.

Although no major impacts are to be expected from president William Ruto’s visit the president hints  on a Washington and Nairobi relationship, on a gradual progress on trade and security initiatives a move which aims to shift away from the “Look East” policy implimented by previous Kenyan presidents in Kenya’s development, for example president Uhuru Kenyatta’s $3.6 billion Standard Gauge Railway project.

Bringing in the United States as the main financier for this project would challenge China as Kenya’s primary partner for large infrastructure projects, a move president William ruto aims to achieve by becoming Washingtons ‘blue eyed boy’ e.g lending Kenya’s soldiers to Haiti, while Kenya still has it’s own insecurity problems.

“No partnership is as valuable as one that is anchored on technology. Kenya appreciates the noble gesture by the United States of America to put more resources in the digital space to expand opportunities and transform lives not only in Kenya but also across our continent-  President William Ruto”.
