Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi Raises Alarm Over Frequent Fires at City Estate

Frequent fires razing homes of city residents at Deep Sea estate are a cause of alarm, Westlands Member of Parliament (MP) Tim Wanyonyi has said.

Speaking on Friday, February 10 when he visited to condole with the victims of a recent fire that affected over 250 homes, Mr Wanyonyi said that he suspected the fires are being caused by criminal elements in the community.

“Hizi nyumba zenu zinachomwa na watu (Your houses are being torched by people),” he reveled.

“I have asked the Governor (Johnson Sakaja) we put in place measures to address this menace,” he added.

He said that he will ask the Governor to accompany him to the area to address the issue in a bid to save the residents from more fire calamities.

Mr Wanyonyi said that he wants to see the residents living a happy life without the fear of losing their homes and properties.

At the same time, he urged elected leaders in the county to always come to the aid of residents whenever such calamities befall them.

He wondered why other elected leaders like the Governor, Woman Representative and MCA do not always respond to such incidents.

According to him, it is time to serve the people who elected them to office and not time to eat.

“We don’t want every time to have you losing your properties every time and I have just come here to help our children not to go hungry and yourselves,” he said.

He donated foodstuffs and beddings to help those affected while assuring them that the county government will also come to their aid following the fire that razed the residences.

The donations included blankets, food package including cooking oil, rice, unga, sugar, green grams, tea leaves as well as salt and wheat flour.

In parliament, he said, they will be seeking answers on the education system and progress so far made on CBC.

He said they will put to task the UDA administration on the progress made on its promises for free education saying right now, parents are still paying school fees for their children.

He said the education system has been badly damaged and Kenyans need answers on what happened to free education programme.

“They must explain to us why schools are asking parents to pay school fees,” he assured the parents.
At the same time, he called on elected leaders on the ODM party under the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya to tore the line and adhere to the party’s vision and agenda.

He called on his colleagues not to be swayed but instead keep their eyes on the prize explaining that development cannot only be realised by being in government.

He was commenting on the recent series of visits to State House by a section of Azimio allied politicians in the name of seeking the president for development in their respective areas.

“We are proud to be in Opposition. We cannot all be in government. Some must be in Opposition to check the government or else the government will sleep on its job,” he explained.

“It is not that we are opposing the government, but we want it to know that they promised people and we want them to deliver those promises,” he noted.
