Nairobi, Kenya – 20th January 2025: In a candid interview on KBC Radio Taifa’s morning show Zinga, Westlands MP Hon. Tim Wanyonyi addressed key national and political issues, expressing concerns over human rights violations, outlining ODM’s position on government collaboration, and critiquing the state of governance in Nairobi.
On Abductions and Security Concerns
Hon. Wanyonyi strongly condemned the ongoing abductions in the country, questioning the involvement of law enforcement agencies.
“If those abducting people are police, why are they in hoods and civilian clothing? They abduct people, hold them for several days, and, in some cases, the victims die. The police must take responsibility for these abductions or, if not, tell us who these criminal elements are,” he remarked.
He stood in solidarity with Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Justin Muturi, who recently spoke out after his son was abducted and later released.
“CS Muturi had every right to express his discontent. His child was abducted for days, and he only received help after speaking with the President. If such abductions can happen to a top government official, what about ordinary citizens? These acts are worse than the detentions under Moi’s era because at least then we knew where people were taken,” he added.
Wanyonyi reiterated that abductions violate constitutional rights and tarnish Kenya’s image internationally. He called on President Ruto and security agencies to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice is served transparently.
On ODM’s Position in Government
Responding to growing speculation about ODM’s collaboration with the ruling UDA party, Wanyonyi clarified that the party is not part of the government.
“ODM is not in government. Some members were appointed individually, but they do not represent the party. ODM must retain its identity and remain the alternative government fighting for Kenyans’ rights,” he explained.
He criticized some ODM members who have openly supported government policies, describing their actions as personal opinions driven by self-interest.
Hon. Wanyonyi emphasized ODM’s commitment to remaining a strong opposition party.
“We will support government policies that benefit Kenyans but will oppose those that oppress. We must agitate for youth employment, better opportunities, and constitutional adherence. There is no pact between ODM and UDA for 2027.”
On ODM’s internal structure, Wanyonyi noted that the party had successfully conducted grassroots elections, ensuring its readiness for the 2027 elections. He also expressed support for Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, who could serve as acting party leader if Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga takes up the AU Chairperson role.
On Nairobi Governance
Hon. Wanyonyi did not hold back in his criticism of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, accusing his administration of inefficiency and lack of accountability.
“This city is run by crooks. They collect taxes with no accountability, and service delivery is nonexistent. Nairobi is filthy, markets are neglected, and traders face harassment. The governor’s contradictory stance on hawkers shows poor leadership,” he stated.
Wanyonyi urged Nairobians to rethink their leadership choices and reaffirmed his intention to vie for the governorship in 2027.
“I was in the race for City Hall in 2022 but stepped down due to Azimio arrangements. At the right time, I will return, and I am confident Nairobians will elect better leadership,” he declared.
On Youth Rights and Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Remarks
Commenting on former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s recent advice to youth to agitate for their rights, Wanyonyi supported the call to action.
“The youth must demand services and opportunities from the government. There was nothing wrong with the former President’s remarks. The government should listen to Kenyans’ grievances rather than dismiss them.”
2027 Aspirations and ODM’s Vision
Hon. Wanyonyi confirmed his intentions to vie for Nairobi Governor in 2027 under ODM. He reiterated the party’s focus on grassroots mobilization, transparency, and policy-driven leadership.
“ODM remains steadfast. We will front candidates from MCA to President in 2027. As for me, I will contest for the Nairobi Governor seat to transform the city and deliver on the promises Nairobians deserve,” he concluded.
