SHA Benefits 2026: What Kenyan Families Can Now Access

By Maggie M
August 19, 2026 4 Min Read

SHA Benefits 2026 are giving Kenyan families access to a wider range of healthcare services, including primary care, maternity services, hospital treatment, cancer care and support for chronic illnesses.

The Social Health Authority (SHA) replaced NHIF in October 2024. Since then, the government has continued to adjust the healthcare package, facilities and payment arrangements available to members.

For families, the important question is simple: what does SHA cover in 2026, and how can you access these services?

Why SHA Benefits 2026 Matter for Kenyan Households

SHA replaced NHIF in October 2024. In 2026, the system operates through three funds designed to cover different healthcare needs.

Knowing what your SHA cover includes can help you plan for medical expenses, understand your monthly contributions and avoid surprises when you visit a hospital.

Key SHA Benefits 2026 for Families

1. SHA Primary and Outpatient Benefits

The Primary Healthcare Fund helps families access basic medical services at approved primary healthcare facilities.

Depending on the service, this can include consultations, diagnosis, treatment, essential medicines and selected laboratory tests.

The government is also expanding primary healthcare as part of its wider Universal Health Coverage programme.

2. Maternity and Newborn Care

Maternity care is an important part of the SHA maternity benefits in Kenya.

The updated package supports services such as antenatal care, normal deliveries, Caesarean sections, newborn care, immunisation, nutrition and postnatal services at eligible Level 2 and Level 3 facilities.

Before visiting a facility, check whether it is contracted by SHA, especially for planned or non-emergency treatment.

3. Inpatient Treatment

The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) provides inpatient care at eligible Level 4, Level 5 and Level 6 facilities, including approved private and faith-based hospitals.

Covered services may include hospitalisation, surgery and other medically necessary treatments, depending on the applicable tariffs, referral rules and benefit limits.

4.SHA Cancer and Chronic Illness Benefits

Cancer treatment is another area receiving greater attention under SHA coverage in Kenya.

Under the 2026 reforms announced by the Ministry of Health, annual support for chronic cancer management is set to increase from KSh150,000 to KSh400,000 per beneficiary.

When combined with SHIF benefits, eligible patients can receive up to KSh800,000 in annual cancer-related support.

The oncology package can include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, laboratory tests and specialised imaging.

Families can also read Kesho News’ coverage of a prostate cancer awareness initiative in Kenya to learn more about the importance of early screening.

5. SHA Emergency and Critical Care Benefits

SHA also provides support through the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund.

This fund is designed to help patients dealing with serious medical conditions and high cost treatment. It can provide additional support when applicable benefits have already been exhausted.

Who Can Benefit From SHA?

SHA is designed to cover households, not just formally employed workers.

Eligible dependants can include spouses, children and certain dependants living with disabilities. Families should therefore make sure all eligible dependants are correctly registered under their household.

For more health-related information, readers can explore Kesho News’ health and lifestyle coverage and its reporting on men’s mental health in Kenya.

What’s New in SHA Benefits 2026?

Cancer patients can now access treatment cover of up to KSh800,000, up from KSh550,000, following President William Ruto’s announcement in November 2025.

The SHA network has also expanded. Since police and prison staff joined the scheme in April 2026, beneficiaries can access healthcare through more than 9,000 facilities across the country, according to reports. (AllAfrica)

SHIF contributions are also deducted before PAYE is calculated for salaried workers, which can reduce the amount of income subject to tax.

This comes alongside healthcare funding approved for county governments for 2026/27, aimed at supporting the public health facilities many families rely on.

How to Register and Use Your SHA Cover

You can register for SHA through the official self-service portal, the Afya Yangu app or by dialling *147# from your phone.

When registering, add your eligible dependants and make sure their details are correct. This can help prevent delays when they need medical care.

For routine treatment, start by visiting your registered primary healthcare facility. If you need specialist or hospital care, the facility can provide a referral where required.

Emergency cases may be handled differently and do not always require the usual referral process.

Community outreach programmes can also help families register and access health information. For example, the cancer screening initiative supported by Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi highlights the role of community based healthcare programmes.

The Bottom Line

The SHA Benefits 2026 package gives Kenyan families access to a wider range of healthcare services, including primary care, maternity services, inpatient treatment, cancer care and support for chronic and critical illnesses.

However, the exact benefits available to you depend on the service, facility, referral requirements and applicable SHA rules.

Before seeking specialised treatment, confirm your eligibility, the facility’s SHA status and any requirements that may apply. This can save your family time, money and unnecessary delays when accessing care.
