Harambee Starlets vs Senegal: Kenya Eye First WAFCON 2026 Points

By Tim Sande
July 29, 2026 3 Min Read

RABAT, Morocco – Kenya’s Harambee Starlets will look to revive their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign when they face Senegal in a must-win Group A encounter on Thursday, July 30, at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

The match, which kicks off at 8:00 pm Kenyan time, presents Kenya with an opportunity to bounce back after a disappointing 4-0 defeat to hosts Morocco in their opening fixture.

Another loss would leave the Starlets on the brink of elimination, while victory would revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage and keep alive their dream of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Odemba Focuses on Players’ Mental Strength

Harambee Starlets head coach Beldine Odemba said rebuilding the players’ confidence has been her biggest priority since the defeat to Morocco.

Although she believes the team is tactically and technically prepared, Odemba said the players must enter Thursday’s contest with the right mentality.

“The main area has been working on the players mentally to ensure they are ready in the right frame of mind. They are technically and tactically prepared, so we want them to be motivated, confident and ready to face the next opponent,” she said.

Kenya Ready for Senegal’s Physical Challenge

Odemba expects another difficult contest against Senegal, describing the West Africans as a physical side.

However, she said the technical bench has thoroughly analysed Senegal’s opening match and believes Kenya has what it takes to compete.

“Tactically, we have analyzed how they played their first match. They are a physical side, but we are ready and capable of matching them,” Odemba said.

She also stressed the importance of improving Kenya’s finishing after the Starlets failed to convert two clear early chances against Morocco.

“We must improve on converting our chances. We created two clear opportunities early in the match against Morocco and failed to capitalize on them. Concentration will be key, and we want to create more chances and be able to capitalize.”

Starlets Eye First Points of the Tournament

Both Kenya and Senegal head into the encounter seeking their first points of the tournament.

While Kenya suffered a heavy defeat to Morocco, Senegal opened their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Algeria.

The outcome leaves both teams under pressure, with defeat significantly damaging their hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals.

Thursday’s encounter will also be the first-ever meeting between Kenya and Senegal in women’s international football.

Enez Mango Confident of Positive Response

Defender Enez Mango believes the squad has recovered mentally from the opening defeat and is determined to deliver a better performance.

“Tomorrow is the most important game for us. We need all three points. We have prepared mentally, we are more confident, and tactically we have to be very smart because they are a physical side. We are ready and hungry for the match,” she said.

Senegal Warns Against Underestimating Kenya

Senegal head coach Serigne Mousse has cautioned his players against taking Kenya lightly despite the Starlets’ opening defeat.

He praised Kenya’s fighting spirit and individual quality ahead of the crucial Group A clash.

“We need to be more competitive and make the best of this opportunity. Kenya has players with strong abilities. They are aggressive and possess talented individuals,” he said.

Tactical Changes Expected

Following defensive lapses and midfield struggles against Morocco, Odemba is expected to make tactical adjustments to improve Kenya’s organisation.

The Starlets’ defence came under sustained pressure during the opening match, while the midfield struggled to shield the backline, leading to several costly mistakes.

Kenya will be hoping a more disciplined display against Senegal can keep their WAFCON campaign alive.

World Cup Qualification at Stake

The expanded 16-team WAFCON 2026 tournament also serves as the African qualification competition for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The four semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the global tournament, making every group-stage match crucial.

After the Senegal clash, Kenya will conclude their Group A campaign against Algeria on August 3 at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

The Starlets know that a positive result against Senegal is essential if they are to remain in contention for a historic place in the knockout stage and continue their quest for a maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance.
