MP Tim Wanyonyi Reaffirms Gubernatorial Bid, Criticizes Nairobi Leadership

Nairobi, Kenya – Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has reiterated his commitment to running for Nairobi Governor in 2027, promising to transform the capital through efficient service delivery. Speaking while issuing school fees sponsorship to 57 bright but needy students, Wanyonyi took a swipe at the current city administration, accusing it of failing to address Nairobi’s pressing challenges.

Wanyonyi, a two-term MP known for his grassroots engagement, emphasized that leadership is about service, not lamentation. “The current governor is complaining that the problems in Nairobi existed before him. Why is he in leadership if he cannot create solutions? He is collecting taxes but is not delivering services. Roads remain in poor condition, drainage is a disaster, and even fire extinguishers lack fuel and water. What kind of leadership is this?” he posed.

Track Record in Westlands

The lawmaker underscored his development track record in Westlands, citing various infrastructure projects he has spearheaded. “Any roads made in Westlands, I am the one who has done them. The county government was supposed to repair or build other roads, but they have done little. They allocate huge sums of money for projects, yet there is nothing tangible to show.”

Wanyonyi positioned himself as the best candidate to transform Nairobi, promising a leadership style that prioritizes residents’ needs. “When I take up the governor’s seat, I will not change. I will serve you even better because I understand governance and service delivery.”

Education & Capitation Challenges

During the event, where needy students received school fees support through the “Friends of Tim Wanyonyi” initiative, the MP also took the opportunity to call on the Ministry of Education to release school capitation funds without delay. “Many secondary schools are struggling with debts owed to service providers, just like universities that almost collapsed due to financial mismanagement. Capitation funds must be released in full and on time to keep our children in school,” he urged.

Governance and Youth Concerns

Wanyonyi further warned against the resurgence of poor governance practices, condemning abductions and threats against activists. He also addressed the recent Gen Z-led protests, which shook the nation. “For a month during the protests, the President did not leave State House. They had attacked Parliament and the Judiciary. Let us not push our citizens to that extent. Civil disobedience is worse than war,” he cautioned.

He called on the government to act on the issues that drove the youth to the streets, rather than dismissing their concerns. “Gen Zs are fearless, and they do not identify themselves by tribe but by age. Their grievances must be addressed to prevent further unrest.”

A Call for Accountable Leadership

Wanyonyi urged Kenyans to be more discerning when electing leaders. “Many politicians only resurface during elections. We must assess leaders based on their track record and choose wisely. Nairobi needs a leader who will serve its residents, not one who engages in endless blame games,” he emphasized.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, MP Wanyonyi is steadily positioning himself as the preferred choice for Nairobi Governor. With a strong track record in Westlands and a commitment to inclusive leadership, he remains a formidable contender in the race for City Hall.
