Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi Awards Scholarships to 67 Bright and Needy Students

Dr Tim Wanyonyi (CBS), the Member of Parliament for Westlands Constituency, issued scholarships to 67 students this morning as part of the Masomo Bora Initiative, a development plan funded by the Westlands National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).

The scholarships, covering a full year’s school fees, were awarded to students from across the constituency, ensuring their uninterrupted education.

The scholarships target students who have demonstrated academic excellence and are in need of financial assistance. Among the recipients are form one students, including the top boy and girl from each of the 19 public primary schools in Westlands, as well as students selected through a rigorous vetting and verification process from the five wards of Parklands, Karura, Kitisuru, Mountain View, and Kangemi. Scholarships were also extended to continuing students from last year’s program.

The Westlands NG-CDF has allocated KES 3.03 million for this tranche of scholarships, highlighting the constituency’s commitment to education. This initiative is part of the broader Masomo Bora Initiative, aimed at enhancing educational outcomes through scholarships, bursaries, and school infrastructure development.

Speaking at the scholarship issuance event at the Westlands Constituency Office, MP Tim Wanyonyi emphasized the importance of education in shaping the future. “Education is an equalizer. Once you have education, you can sit in any position in the world. Nobody can take that from you,” he said. Wanyonyi encouraged the scholarship recipients to focus on their studies, avoid distractions, and aim for top grades.

Fridah Lenayasa, Chairlady of NG-CDF Westlands, urged the students to make the most of this opportunity. “Shine the way our MP Tim Wanyonyi shines as the top MP in Kenya. Ensure you perform well so that we do not review your scholarship,” she advised.

Baskalia Laboso, the Fund Manager of NG-CDF Westlands

Baskalia Laboso, the Fund Manager of NG-CDF Westlands, reminded the scholarship beneficiaries to remain accountable. “Once you take the cheque, bring back the receipt. For those who do not, you stand the risk of being omitted. Government carries out audits, and the receipts show that we paid for you and you reported to school,” Laboso noted.

Vincent Samburumo, Coordinator of the Masomo Bora Scholarship program

Vincent Samburumo, Coordinator of the Masomo Bora Scholarship program, outlined the expectations for scholarship recipients. “We demand top performance and grades because you are in good schools and under this scholarship program. Previous beneficiaries of this program all qualified for university, so do not be a letdown,” he said.

The event concluded with a call for parents to stay involved in their children’s education and to support their academic journey. Wanyonyi encouraged parents not to abandon their children to teachers alone, stressing the importance of moulding their character at home.

The Westlands NG-CDF has also been active in supporting students beyond secondary school. Just last week, the fund issued bursary cheques to 5,000 secondary school beneficiaries and 1,500 college beneficiaries.
