Schools not Breeding Grounds for Criminals – Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi

Criminals in the name of students in schools will not be tolerated, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has warned.

His warning comes hours after a fire razed a dormitory at Kangemi High School in a suspected arson attack.

Already, at least five students have been arrested and remanded at Kabete Police Station pending investigations following the night inferno that left some 130 students counting losses.

“Those in police custody we’ll find a way of taking them to a proper rehabilitation programme so that we get those evil minds out so that we make sure we mould people who will also in future mould others,” he said.

“But if we are preparing people who are going to become criminals, that’s not our trade here. Our trade here is to mould good citizens, people with values, people who will love and enjoy,” he advised.

He discouraged students against engaging in acts of lawlessness as they greatly affect their parents and guardians as they will be forced to shoulder the cost of repairing the damages.

The MP assured the school principal the leadership of Westlands Constituency will support him in his bid to make the institution a better place for learning.

“Mwalimu we are here to support you and these young men to be good citizens in future,” he said.

On his part, the principal, Mr Musembi Mulatya, said he was still new but was firmly in control and assured the school community of good leadership.

He promised to instill discipline in the students saying he hoped this was the last fire incident to occur in the school.

According to him, at least five students sustained injuries as they tried to put out the night fire. They were treated and discharged and are out of danger.

“We are going to turn Kangemi School around and it is going to become a centre of excellence and not a crime scene,” he noted.

At the time of the fire, 13o students were in the dormitory but only a few sustained injuries even though they lost all their properties.

The incident happened on the night of February 20-21 when all students had gone to bed.
