Westlands Member of Parliament (MP) Tim Wanyonyi has declared total war against alcoholism in the city constituency with special targets on parents.
In a terse warning against the vice, which he said was to blame for slowed development, he said he will not sit and watch as the young generation wastes away in alcoholism.
Those engaged in brewing, selling and promoting the illicit drinks, he said, should come to him directly for help in setting up another income generating venture.
“If you are the one involved in brewing and selling of changaa and you wish to change and do another business, just come to me, we talk and see the way forward,” he urged.
“We want those men and women making chang’aa whose job is to make changaa that is harmful to our youngmen, we are saying stop immediately…come to my office and we will find a solution which will help you start a legit and beneficial business for you,” he said.
He was speaking on Thursday in Kangemi, when he presided over the application and issuance of bursary forms to parents and their school going children.
According to the MP, he is worried that soon there would be a generational gap where the current young generation will not be able to continue older generation.
He said the effects of over indulgence was being felt in parts of Central Kenya where most youngmen have been rendered ‘useless’ and unable to raise their own families.
“We want to build the confidence of our boychild. We want him to come out boldly and face the world because if a homestead cannot stand tall yet there is a man, then there is a problem.
“We want to bring up responsible men, men and women who can take over the leadership of this country,” he said amid shouts of affirmation from the parents and residents.
The legislator encouraged parents to ensure their children, especially sons, are taught to be responsible in the society.
To him, the first step, parents should stop over pampering their sons, a thing he said makes them weak, dependent and lack vision even at their work places and school.
