Green Commandos Eye Record 15th KSSSA National Title After Seven-Year Wait

A Long-Awaited Return

After seven years away from the KSSSA National Championships, Kakamega School’s Green Commandos are finally back on the biggest stage. This time, however, they return with one clear objective—to win a record-extending 15th national title.

The Green Commandos last lifted the national trophy in 2018. On that occasion, they defeated Ol Bolosat Secondary School from Central Region 1-0 in the final played at Hill School in Eldoret. As a result, they secured their 14th national championship and strengthened their reputation as Kenya’s most successful secondary school football team.

Now, another generation has the opportunity to write its own history.

A Second Chance Revives the Dream

Initially, Kakamega School’s journey appeared to have come to an end.

The Green Commandos finished third at the Kakamega County Games after losing 2-0 to Musingu High School in the semi-finals. Consequently, their hopes of reaching the national championships looked over.

However, football often offers unexpected twists.

Following the disqualification of Butere Boys for fielding ineligible players, Kakamega School inherited a place at the Western Region Championships. Therefore, the Green Commandos received an unexpected second chance to keep their national dream alive.

Instead of dwelling on their county disappointment, they embraced the opportunity with determination and confidence.

An Unbeaten Regional Campaign

The Green Commandos immediately justified their inclusion at the regional championships.

First, they defeated Bukembe 3-1 before overcoming Kolanya 2-0. They then played out a goalless draw against Emusire to secure a place in the knockout stages.

Afterwards, Kakamega School produced one of its best performances of the tournament by defeating Kibabii High School 4-0 in the semi-finals.

Finally, they completed their remarkable turnaround with a convincing 2-0 victory over long-time rivals Musingu High School in the final. Consequently, they lifted the Western Region title and booked a place at the national championships for the first time since 2018.

Equally impressive were their statistics. The Green Commandos scored 11 goals, conceded only once and kept four clean sheets in five matches.

A Legacy Built on Success

Kakamega School is no stranger to success on the national stage.

In total, Kakamega School has won a record 14 national football titles. Thirteen of those have come in the KSSSA Under-19 Boys’ Football Championship, while the 14th was the Copa Coca-Cola Under-16 national title won in 2017. Together, those achievements underline the Green Commandos’ status as Kenya’s most successful school football programme.

Because of that history, expectations are always high whenever Kakamega School qualifies for the national championships.

Nevertheless, the current squad understands that history alone cannot win trophies. Instead, every generation must create its own legacy.

A Talented Squad Chasing History

This year’s team has shown both quality and resilience throughout the campaign.

Mike Okoth and Julius Ochieng have led the scoring charts with consistent performances. Meanwhile, Daniel Ombati has delivered important goals in crucial matches. Brighton Nacheri has provided creativity from midfield, while captain Fidel Odhiambo has inspired the team with strong leadership.

Similarly, players such as Macline Adika, Derrick Wanyonyi, Eugene Beleti and goalkeeper Chris Georgian have played vital roles throughout the season.

Together, they have built a balanced squad capable of challenging the very best teams in the country.

Eyes on Title Number 15

The Green Commandos are travelling to the national championships with confidence rather than complacency.

Although the road back has been challenging, the team has repeatedly demonstrated character whenever it has faced adversity. Moreover, their performances at the Western Region Championships proved that they belong among Kenya’s elite school teams.

Now, they stand just a few matches away from adding another chapter to Kakamega School’s remarkable football history.

If they succeed, they will end a seven-year wait for national glory. More importantly, they will bring the KSSSA boys’ football title back to Kakamega and extend the school’s record to 15 national championships.

For the Green Commandos, the mission is simple. They want to honour the rich tradition built by previous generations while creating a legacy that future players will strive to match. The dream is alive once again, and Kakamega School is determined to seize the moment.
